Abstract
The Western side of Tripoli, which has witnessed a great urban prosperity, is abount with many Islamic monuments dating back to the Ottoman period (1551-1911). Considering the earliest Ottoman period (1551-1711), it can be noted that Othman Pasha al-Sagazzli (1649-1672) contributed largely to establishing several economic, military and religious buildings. Among these attractions, both his madrasa located near the port and the Dargouth Pasha mosque, are of special relevance. A special type of soil has been added to the latter monument regarded as one of the renowned funeral monuments in the city. Soon after, a second funeral nucleus was formed, which was also added to the madrasa. The monument as a whole contains many important architectural and artistic elements, as well as the existence of the memorial and funeral inscriptions of high significance.
Despite the interest of some researchers in the madrasa, the funerary monuments were not extensively covered by the historical and archaeological studies except for some modest mentions. Hence, this paper will seek to shed light on the monument as a whole with special focus on the majority of the graves.
